Stoos Ridge Hike

With extraordinary views of Lake Lucerne and the Muota on either side of the trail, this hike in Switzerland is surrounded by beautiful views as you climb the staircases and switchbacks. Enjoy the view of the many Swiss brown cows from the chairlifts as they create a symphony with their bells as they graze along the mountain side. You may also encounter a few of these sweet beings on the trail.

You can expect this hike to take between two to two and a half hours to climb just under three miles. The hike is considered moderate in terms of difficulty. I advise you to wear hiking boots to have a safe and sure-footed hiking experience. Some hikers even brought walking poles along. The trail is also secured with chains from June to November for your safety.

You will take a funicular train up to the base of the mountain, at which point there is a chair lift to bring you to the base of the Stoos Ridge trail. The funicular train runs every thirty minutes and the chairlift is constantly running throughout the day.

Fun fact: the funicular ride is the steepest in the world, at a whopping 110% gradient, you glide up the mountain side with ease. It is awe-inspiring to experience the ride.

While you can hike the ridge from either direction via the chairlifts, the route from Klingenstock to Fronalpstock is the route most commonly taken by hikers.

At the top of the hike, you can find a small petting zoo with a goat or two, as well as a cafe for lunch and drinks with a spectacular view. You can also find several other dining options, and an ice cream stand, as you make your way back down to the funicular ride down.
